Partner Critique

I critiqued Abby's solo, and I think overall it was a great piece. She portrayed a theme of trying to find yourself while being pulled by others in different directions. Her dance started faster and slowed down when the text began to be read. I thought this made it interesting and gave the text more emphasis. There was a lot of long reaches and rolls in the piece which helped develop the concept of being pulled different directions and trying to fight back for yourself. Most of these movements stayed in the same general area though, and I think if she used her space a little more it would have made the dance even better. I really liked the music she chose and how she read the text in the background. The music got more complex as the dance got more complex, but the music never overpowered the dance since it was a simple and crisp song. Her movement choices made a great balance between her theme and her music because it was strong enough to show how she was struggling but still went with the lighter music she picked. Most of the dance was done straight up and I think if she had put some more levels into it, then it would have enhanced the dance even more. Her costume was simple but it fit well and showed how she was being pulled different ways since it was black and white. I liked how she began and ended in basically the same position which tied the entire piece together, and there seemed to be a climax during the reading of the text. Overall, I think Abby did a great job showing her theme in her solo and her performance was excellent!
